Learn How To Have Fun & Be Safe!

Our training camp is designed for the 1st time winter rider as well as for the more experienced winter traveler.  This camp will further your knowledge and education about winter bike packing and survival in the variable conditions one might encounter during a winter bike adventure.

Whether you are preparing for an upcoming multi-day winter bike race or looking to enjoy a day ride, you are certain to take away several new tricks and tips by attending our camp.

This camp is an immersive winter experience with expert winter fat bikers. Learn the gear, techniques, and safety of riding a fat bike and camping on snow trails.

We will share our experience, gear knowledge and techniques of riding a fat bike and camping on snow trails.   Along the way, we will also share with you how to manage and stay comfortable in a range of temperatures, including -40F.  Having the right gear that works for you and knowing how to use it, is essential. All the little tricks which we have acquired by trial and error through thousands of miles of winter riding and camping will be of benefit to you. It may save your fingers, nose, toes or possibly your life one day.

This is not a physical training camp, although we will be riding and spending most of our time outside.

Jay Petervary

A professional cyclist filled with bike knowledge. JayP may have the most ultra endurance cycling experience. 25yrs of multi-day racing, 13yrs of winter fat biking, and a race resume too long to list. Jay's has competed in the Iditarod Trail Invitational 11 times.

Tracey Petervary

Tracey's 20 years of ultra racing experience includes 10yrs of winter ultra cycling. Having done the Iditarod Trail Invitational 5 times (North and South routes to Nome - 1000 miles), Fat Pursuit and Arrrowhead. Learn how far a positive attitude takes you.

Special Guest, Aaron Gardner

Put your antlers up, this fun, fat loving rider was the only finisher and winner of the classic 200 Mile 2017 Fat Pursuit. You may remember that it was 40 below, high winds, and snowing. Aaron is also Iditarod Trail Invitational veteran.

What Will Be Provided

Theory and practice on the following topics:

  • Equipment selection: bike, clothing and gear

  • Packing: in depth strategies for efficiently packing gear on your bike and your body

  • Winter bike maintenance (preventative and emergency)- ie. changing a flat on the trail (ever do it in while snowing in freezing temperatures?) TP has good story

  • Layering strategies & body maintenance – how to keep warm and stay dry!

  • Setting up a Winter bivy/sleeping system

  • Cooking: using stoves for meal preparation and snow melting for hydration

  • Nutrition: tips on how to stay hydrated and fueled in the cold

  • Snow riding (or possibly pushing) tips and techniques: what to look for, reading snow, when to push, what types of air pressure, etc.

What Will Not Be Provided

Bikes and Equipment

  • Bike rentals available
  • A suggested gear list will be provided upon receiving a deposit but also make your own decisions on what you want to bring. We will discuss equipment/clothing/gear as part of a exercise on Day 2.

Lodging Before and After

  • During the camp you will be sleeping outside with knowing the comfort of warmth is near by in case of an emergency. Remember the purpose of the camp is to learn at and possibly do things for the first time. With that said we may challenge you in some cases but here to help and guide you.

Breakfast, Lunch and Trail Snacks

  • Using your stove and boiling water is a priceless winter discipline. We expect you to do this each morning and is a great way to start your day, making your breakfast and/or cup of coffee.
  • We will also stop each day during our riding and have lunch. Up to you if you if you want it hot or cold. I might suggest hot or at least make a hot chocolate.

Day 1

  • Meet-and-Greet – guests need to arrive to camp headquarters by noon
  • Lunch will be provided
  • Ride
  • Theory and Practice on setting up a bivy and other prep work for the evening
  • Dinner is provided at headquarters.
  • Sleep under the stars

Day 2

  • Breakfast on your own next to your bivy
  • Theory and practice on gear and how to pack a bike
  • Ride
  • Trail side lunch (not provided)
  • Dinner is provided at headquarters
  • Sleep under the stars

Day 3

  • Breakfast on your own next to your bivy
  • Theory and practice on bike maintence
  • Todays ride will bring us into the backcountry where we will also bivy
  • Trail side lunch (not provided)
  • Dinner trailside will be provided
  • Sleep under the stars in the backcountry

Day 4

  • Breakfast on your own next to your bivy
  • Bigger day of riding
  • Trail side lunch (not provided)
  • Dinner at headquarters or Ponds Lodge
  • Sleep under the stars

Day 5

  • Breakfast on your own next to your bivy
  • Group discussion on things learned etc
  • Optional ride
  • Shake hands, give hugs and say good-bye around noon

Payment Details

Cost of the camp is $999.
Payment can be made over the phone using a credit card, sending a check by mail or
DEPOSIT: 50% required at booking.
FINAL PAYMENT: Due in full 60 days prior to start of the event.
CANCELLATION POLICY: Cancellation 90 days or more before departure: Full refund. Cancellation 89 to 60 days before departure: 25% of the tour price. Cancellation 59 to 30 days before departure: 50% of the tour price Cancellation less than 29 days before departure: 100% of the tour price if we can fill your cancelled space, we will be able to waive all but the $100 booking fee. Requests for refunds must be submitted by email or letter. We reserve the right to make alterations of itineraries for safety or scheduling reasons. Participants must be in reasonably good health without physical or mental disabilities that would compromise the tour. At request we will send a gear list and agenda.
